IKEA 2017 Stockholm Sofa

Following the release of IKEA’s 2019 catalogue, comes about new collections and products, some being things we haven’t seen before, and others being refreshingly new iterations of old classics.

There’s certainly a whole lot that we could talk about from IKEA’s new catalogue, but to make things easier, we decided to put together a list of our all-time top 10 favorite IKEA sofas.

To help us narrow down our top picks for 2019, we chose to focus on these criteria in our IKEA sofa reviews:

  • Popularity: How long has it been on the market?
  • Variety: How many sizes and styles are there to choose from? How does it fit in different rooms and spaces?
  • Aesthetics: How pretty is it?
  • Comfort: Which is the most comfortable Ikea sofa?

Dishonourable mention: the Knopparp “sofa”. A little fabric on a frame does not make a sofa. Even an outdoor lounge chair has more integrity this metal monster.

10. Stockholm

Coming in at 10th place is this stunning sofa from the IKEA’s Stockholm collection. It looks absolutely beautiful with its contemporary style that visually conveys comfort.

It comes with original velvet slipcovers in dark orange, dark blue, and grey, which amps up the luxury and has most certainly set the bar high for all the other sofas during our IKEA sofa reviews.

The collection includes a 3-seater sofa (with 2 seat cushions), a 2-seater sofa (with one seat cushion), a woven rattan chair with cushions, and a marshmallow-shaped pouffe.

Status: Available!

9. Stocksund

The sturdy Stocksund sofa is still going strong since its introduction in 2014, and this year a leather version has been added to the collection.

When we were doing these IKEA couch reviews, one thing we really noticed about the Stocksund was that Its deep, comfortable seats are perfect for lounging in, and the classic English rolled armrests with spindle legs appeal to the more traditional aesthetic.

This range includes the armchair, 3-seater, 2-seater and bench (with storage), so it’s perfect for dressing up a large living area with matching furniture.

Status: Available, although the footstool has been discontinued.

8. Holmsund

The quiet, unassuming Holmsund sofabed comes in 2 variants: the corner/sectional sofabed and 3-seater sofabed. Interestingly the armrest fronts are “banana-shaped” and the back cushions have a wide flange, lending this range a characteristic feminine style.

Some additional things that gave the Holmsund some extra brownie points during our IKEA couch reviews, was the fact that the Holmsund sectional has a storage compartment under the chaise where you can store pillows, blankets and linens, and when you have guests over just pull up the bed and they’ll have somewhere to crash for the night.

The great thing is that it comes with original sofa covers so it’s easy to keep clean, is super comfortable and looks good at the same time.

7. Klippan

The Klippan’s basic style and appealing price point makes it ideal for first home owners and city dwellers with small homes. The loveseat itself seats 2 people comfortably, or 3 people very closely together.

Visually, it’s a blank slate and you can get any cover you want to change up its look (even leather) to make the sofa truly your own.

It’s not the most comfortable IKEA sofa out there, especially when you compare it to other sofas with pocket-spring cushions, but it’s indeed a perfectly serviceable sofa with a great lifespan.

6. Soderhamn

We’ve written about the Soderhamn quite a bit on our resource page and IKEA sofa reviews, and we’ve even hacked it to resemble a designer piece.

This collection is modular, so you can just go with the regular 3-seater (armrests optional) and build up to a larger sectional if you have a big space. With just the chair/one-seat, sofa, corner and chaise pieces, you can mix and match to build the sectional of your dreams in your space.

Though it certainly comes close to being one of the most comfortable IKEA sofas (by comfortable we also mean “sleep-inducing”). It’s a lot more suitable for a casual family room rather than a formal living room due to its deep seating depth and low height, but a major plus point for this range is how it looks – quite a departure from the traditional sofa styles we see from IKEA.

5. Norsborg

The marshmallow-like cushions and almost cloud-like shape make the Norsborg look like a dream to sink into after a long day at work.

It’s only been two years since this range was introduced and it seems like it’s sticking around for a while, and is especially popular due to its flexibility.

A popular combination is in a U-shape, and for smaller homes, a 2-seater plus chaise combination gives you the L-shaped section easily.

4. Karlstad

It’s been almost 10 years since the Karlstad came into existence after the popular Karlanda was phased out. Over the years, the range grew to include 2 types of armchairs, 2-seater, 3-seater sofa, sofabed, corner sofa, 2 chaise variants and a footstool, which is basically every iteration of living room seating you might even dream of.

Has there been any other sofa that has made such a huge impact on the DIY scene? The Karlstad is just a square armed sofa, right?

Technically, yes, but over the past decade, people have been coming up with many ways to reinvent, refresh and hack the Karlstad to suit their personal styles and tastes. This is why it scored so highly in our IKEA sofa reviews, because of its popularity and flexibility, and could arguably be one of the best IKEA sofas out there.

Status: Discontinued.

3. Friheten

After the massively popular Manstad sofabed was discontinued, a few models with similar mechanisms rose up to fill the void in our hearts. The one that has persisted and came out on top was the Friheten, an L-shaped sofabed with storage under the chaise and a hidden bed compartment.

Even though it’s not the most comfortable IKEA sofa, it definitely earns its points for its versatility as a sectional sofa, the roomy storage compartment, and the pull-out bed that can transform your sofa into a double bed for guests.

In late 2016 the Friheten added a younger sibling to the line-up, a 3-seater sofabed (sans chaise and storage).

2. Ektorp

Where do we begin? The classic round armed design makes the Ektorp a favourite among those who want a traditional style, and it’s clearly popular with the relaxed, modern farmhouse homes.

The slipcovered style with the long skirt and corner pleats play a big part in how the sofa is perceived as a more classic sofa, but IKEA did sell leather Ektorps, complete with exposed legs and a skirtless, upholstered look.

We’ve also hacked the Ektorp, and aside from its timeless style and versatility, the comfort factor puts the Ektorp amongst the top for most comfortable IKEA sofas out there.

1. Kivik

Kivik series in Kino Orange fabrics

We love the Kivik in its various incarnations. It scored the highest in our IKEA sofa reviews, making it one of the best IKEA sofas out there.

It’s everything we ever wanted in one sofa: wide and deep seating, comfortable seat and back cushions, and a modular configuration so you can switch up your look whenever you want.

Washable slipcovers make keeping it clean easy, and the wide armrests balance out the look, you can even sit on the armrests in case you run out of seating space.

It’s been a couple of years since the Kivik has been out and it seems like the cushions are holding up well with minimal compression so it’s great for families with active households too.

Status: Available!
